The Potential Power of Employee Surveys

If leaders are not willing to rise to the challenges presented by the employee survey it is a waste of time.

August 15, 2011. Employee surveys are potentially a powerful tool that could transform your organization and take it to the next level. Such transformation can only occur if the surveys are written and used properly.

Unfortunately, most employee surveys don’t get used - instead they get shoved into the drawer and forgotten. That means you should never conduct an employee survey unless you are serious about acting on its conclusions.

Therefore the most important aspect of an employee survey is the commitment to change. Employees must know that management is actually going to read the survey and take action based upon its results. There must be a leadership team that is aware of the organization’s problems and committed to fixing them.

Managers must be prepared to examine the results of the survey and act upon them. That means managers must be ready for news they don’t want to hear such as low morale, confusion about the mission or anger at the leadership team.

If leaders are not willing to rise to the challenges presented by the employee survey it is a waste of time. If they are willing to accept their challenges the survey can be the beginning of a transformation.

If the survey indicates low morale the managers must identify the source of the poor morale and try to address it. This could mean visiting issues such as compensation or paid time off.

A good way to harness the power of employee surveys is with smart goals. A team could be put together to create and implement smart goals based on the survey’s findings. Low morale could be dealt with by efforts to improve working conditions or communication between employees and management.

If an issue identified is communication, a smart goal could be facilitating communications between workers and managers. This could be solved by something as simple as a weekly meeting between workers and a management representative.

Employee surveys are a powerful tool for transformation. They should never be left in the drawer or treated like a joke.
