Headaches, stomachaches, and back pains—these are just some of the chronic complaints that often keep children from attending school. Pills normally work for these ailments, but introducing kids to a lot of pills early in their lives may not be good.

So, why not try something more natural? Why not consider acupuncture for your kids?

Acupuncture has been recognized as a major alternative treatment option for adults—but for kids? Well, acupuncture might be the next big thing for kids. A recent study conducted by Dr. Yuan-Chi Lin of the Children’s Hospital in Boston, a Harvard-affiliated institution, found out that 70 percent of children that reported various painful ailments were relieved of their symptoms after being treated with acupuncture.

Laura, a mother of two who has sought the help of top New York City acupuncturist Jill Blakeway, sees acupuncture as a big help for her children. Laura relates that there were times when she’d rush her kids to the hospital clinic where the pediatrician would look and say, “You know it’s some virus…” Two or three hours later she’d visit Jill’s YinOva Center for an acupuncture session for her kids. "And literally within the treatment the colors start coming back into their cheeks,” Laura said.

Jill Blakeway is perhaps known for her role as the “fertility goddess” of New York City (http://yinovacenter.com). But Jill also uses acupuncture to help children. Jill’s YinOva Center treats children for a wide range of ailments, such as, respiratory issues, asthma, and repeated ear infections. Also, Jill’s clinic accommodates infants. "We start with little babies with colic and people are often surprised to find out that we treat babies...with acupuncture," Jill added.

For Jill, acupuncture and Chinese medicine provides a very effective treatment option for children suffering chronic conditions. She laments that more and more kids are getting into a cycle where they take up pills over and over again. Most of the time antibiotics cause mild side effects to children, like fatigue and stomach cramps. Sometimes, though, antibiotic side effects may become worse if the child is repeatedly using it. Indeed, relying on too much antibiotic is not ideal for children. To interrupt that cycle, Jill recommends acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

Some parents might argue that acupuncture may not work for their kids because it involves needles. Sure, the vast majority of kids are often afraid of needles. But Jill’s clinic employs an innovative needle-free device dubbed the “tickle machine” to treat needle-phobic children. The machine is electronically powered and mimics the effects of acupuncture needles. It is so pain-free that children are actually tickled when it is used on them.
