Labtiva, Nature Publishing Group (NPG), and Digital Science announced today the integration of the ReadCube Web Reader with nature.com.

With the ReadCube Web Reader, nature.com users can now highlight and annotate article PDFs directly in the browser. Thanks to the new technology, references cited inside the article become “clickable” in the PDF, delivering a new kind of interactive reading experience.

“Integrating tools like ReadCube is part of our continued efforts to make nature.com an integral and efficient part of researchers’ workflow,” said Dan Pollock, Associate Director, nature.com.

The ReadCube Web Reader is a partner product to Labtiva’s ReadCube desktop application. With the nature.com integration, researchers may now download article PDFs that they annotate on nature.com straight into their ReadCube libraries.

The ReadCube Web Reader on nature.com

The ReadCube Web Reader is a browser-based PDF reader that enriches the PDF of journal articles with functionality, including clickable in-line references and direct links to related articles. It is accessed by clicking on ‘PDF options’ in the navigation of 18 journals on nature.com. The ReadCube Web Reader enables users to highlight and annotate article content, and sync their edits to the ReadCube desktop application. The ReadCube Web Reader also includes an integrated view of the supplementary information and associated News & Views.

To benefit from the new features, readers must have a personal subscription or site license to access subscription content on nature.com. Open access content in Nature Communications and Scientific Reports, and free content where available, is freely available to all both on nature.com and in the ReadCube Web Reader.

The ReadCube Web Reader is currently available on Scientific Reports, Nature and 18 Nature research journals: Nature Biotechnology, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Chemical Biology, Nature Chemistry, Nature Climate Change, Nature Communications, Nature Genetics, Nature Geoscience, Nature Immunology, Nature Materials, Nature Medicine, Nature Methods, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Photonics, Nature Physics, Nature Protocols, and Nature Structural & Molecular Biology. ReadCube integration will be added to additional journals on nature.com over time.

“We are thrilled with the interest from publishers in implementing the ReadCube Web Reader on their sites. The ReadCube Web Reader serves their desire to serve scientists better by offering enhanced reading of scientific articles. Our efforts to design products to the specifications of today’s scientists working,” said Sinisa Hrvatin, co-founder of Labtiva, and graduate student in Biological Sciences at Harvard. “Researchers love ReadCube.”
