During peak times during the year such as weekends in the spring and summer months, over 40% of homeowners take on home improvement works to make their home a better place to live, and to achieve a higher property value.

So what are the home improvements that most add value to your home?

HSBC recently surveyed thousands of householders across the UK, the findings showed that many of them will be spending weekends and holidays - more so from March to September - redecorating rooms, updating kitchens and bathrooms, laying new flooring or giving their outside areas a makeover.

Whilst many of these home improvement jobs add value, several of them add little or no value to the property. It simply makes the home more attractive to potential buyers, helping to achieve the property value and also making it a nicer place to live.

The best way to add value to a home is to add a loft conversion. This will increase the property value by an average of £20,876 - a 54% increase over the last three years. A room extension will add around £15,000 and a conservatory will add approximately £8,200. All of these improvements create more living space, so it will follow that the house will be worth more.

The most popular home improvements according to the survey are decorating works, which will improve the value by £3,229 which is a 62% increase since 2009.

Installing a new kitchen is the 8th most popular improvement that people make to their homes, after redecorating, minor repairs, fence repairs, repainting the front door, re carpeting, decking and a new bathroom.

A new kitchen adds £5,617 to the value of a home compared to £4,147 in 2009.
