The cost of insuring drivers has risen in the last 12 months, and this is set to continue. Young people aged 17 to 22 are paying particularly high premiums given the risk to this age group of injury or death on the road. The claims that are made by those aged 17 to 22 is more than the total claims made by those aged 33 to 44.

A study by the company Young Marmalade has shown that more than 96 per cent of young people feel that they are being priced off the road, and that they cannot afford to drive due to these high insurance costs.

However, many people are finding way to reduce their car insurance bills.

One of these methods is to fit a black box tracker. By fitting this device, many young people can cut their insurance on vehicles that they otherwise not be able to obtain cover for such as large vehicles or those with high spec engines. This enables young people to prove that they are good drivers, with tracking showing whether they are sticking to the speed limits and avoiding sudden breaking and acceleration.

This is ideal for young, cautious drivers and could result in a fall in your premium to under half of what it could be without a device such as this.

Another way to cut insurance costs is to take defensive driver training courses. Defensive driver courses are based on the Police Driving Manual "Roadcraft" which as well as being the basis for Police Traffic Officer training is also the bible for many advanced drivers.

The courses cover many aspects of remaining safe on the road, and teaches drivers to learn how to improve their observation, anticipation and planning so that the vehicle will always be in the right place on the road, at the right time, travelling at the right speed with the correct gear. It means that drivers can stop safely and that they are always seen by other cars, thus cutting drastically the chances of being involved in a car accident.

Paul Beresford runs Defensive Driver Training. DDT offers defensive and advanced driver training to help keep the roads, and its drivers safe and secure. DDT helps to train company, fleet and personal drivers keeping insurance and repair costs down. He says:

"It's important to find ways to remain safe on the roads, and in doing so you could find that this works in your favour when it comes to renewing your insurance premium. The less accidents you have - whether they are minor prangs or more serious accidents - the less your insurance will be over time. We train many drivers on all aspects of remaining safe on the roads and we especially appeal to parents who's children have just started to drive and you are concerned about them staying safe, given that they are the highest risk driver on the roads today."
