Thanks to the efforts of dozens of online volunteers, Georgia voters who use Google Instant to learn more about Republican gubernatorial candidate Nathan Deal are recommended by the engine to search for his ethics, a query which returns numerous reports of his violations.
Spearheaded by Atlanta SEO firm Penn Multimedia, the pro-bono campaign began less than two months ago and has successfully impacted Deal’s online reputation on Google, the largest search engine in the world. Poll numbers offline have also been impacted by Deal’s latest ethics scandals, with the Republican and Democrat candidates tied at 42% each, according to the latest poll by Insider Advantage.
Search expert and Penn Multimedia Vice President Seth Persily used search engine optimization (SEO) tactics to increase the relevance of Nathan Deal’s ethics in the suggestions provided by Google Instant. The firm also created mini sites like http://www.NathanDealEthics.com to highlight Deal’s corruption and invite volunteers to participate in their efforts.
“Political campaigns are run on millions of dollars, and it’s becoming increasingly expensive and frustrating for private citizens to have their voices heard,” said Penn Multimedia spokesperson Joseph King. “But the internet is a more level playing field. We can use our expertise here and connect with volunteers all over Georgia and beyond.”
Penn Multimedia, which specializes in Online Reputation Management and Search Engine Marketing for companies such as Premiere Georgia Tree Services, decided to put their skills to use in a pro-bono campaign after Deal’s advertisements highlighted anti-gay rhetoric in August, including ads that attacked a local Atlanta charity, YouthPride, which provides support for LGBT teens in Georgia.
Persily and his team provided volunteers with a simple and easily actionable plan to enhance the search relevance of Nathan Deal’s ethics violations. The ethics query became more important than Deal’s biography and his stance on various political issues. Similar tactics are used by online reputation specialists to manage online brands and keep their image positive. In this case, however, Penn Multimedia and their volunteers felt that Nathan Deal’s ethics scandals needed to be highlighted, not buried, in order to give voters the ability to make the most informed decision on November 2.
“Nathan Deal is asking voters to elect him as the chief executive of the state of Georgia,” said King. “We want to do everything we can to bring his scandalous record and views to light.”
Nathan Deal’s campaign has responded with counter-measures targeting Persily and his firm, but Penn Multimedia and their volunteers stated that they are determined to continue their efforts. Those interested in contributing their time can contact the company at info(at)pennmultimedia.com.
