"By 2015, there will be a doctor shortage by approximately 63,000 physicians as estimated by Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). "
To resolve the issue, AAMC calls to freeze or end Medicare support for residency training. Based on the fact list submitted, since 1997, Medicare support for training physicians did not grow, in spite of the continuous increase in the number of Medicare actual residents.
AAMC says that to fill in the lacking figure on doctors shortage, different medical schools is increasing and an additional 7,000 graduates per year over the next 10 years will be produced. It is also advised for Medicare to still pay for its training share costs by supporting 15 percent increase in GME jobs, and allow teaching hospitals to have another 4,000 doctors per year to meet the actual demands in the coming years.
AAMC also added that within the next 10 years, the number of physicians to treat Americans will increase only by 7 percent while there is a 36 percent increase in the number of Americans whose age is 65 and above. It is a clear view of the lack of doctors that America will have in the next decade. They also added that 15 million patients will become new members of Medicare and 32 million Americans will be insured newly in Medicare as part of new healthcare reform. This is to compensate the demand for doctors for the coming years.
