Joker Figure creator, Jerry Robinson, was only seventeen when he created the larger-than-life supervillian. His fateful encounter with Bob Kane, the creator of Batman, is retold in a richly illustrated biography entitled “Jerry Robinson: Ambassador of Comics,” released last month by Abrams ComicArts and the toy figure is available at JokerFigure.com.
The book chronicles Robinson’s career as comic-book artist and writer, comics historian, editorial cartoonist, and creator of the popular Joker character.
Robinson was vacationing in the Poconos during the summer between high school and college where he met Bob Kane who had just finished the Detective Comics No. 27, which included the first appearance of Batman. Kane had noticed Robinson’s drawings on his jacket and the two got to talking.
Robinson later switched to Columbia University in order to work closely with Kane on Batman. It was a heady time for the budding illustrator, “We really lived, ate, drank and slept Batman — ideas, characters and stories,” he said.
The Joker is a fictional character, a comic book supervillain published by DC Comics as the archenemy of Batman. Created by Jerry Robinson, Bill Finger and Bob Kane, The character first appeared in Batman #1 in 1940.
The Joker’s popularity throughout the years have lead to numerous movies, Joker figure toy and merchandising deals depicting versions of the character; from vintage Batman series featuring Cesar Romero to Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton’s Batman series and Heath Ledger’s depiction in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
