Dr. Pothole Offers New Prescription for Road Health with Fast, Effective and Environmentally

October– Fixing potholes is easier, less expensive, and has less impact on the environment with a new, patented process prescribed by Dr. Pothole. The just-launched Fairfax-based company uses infrared technology and recycles old material with new to fix potholes and other roadway problems in just 20 minutes.
Dr. Pothole, Fairfax’s new ‘green’ asphalt repair service, uses a patented technology to mend road problems in less time and with less impact on business flow and the environment than was previously possible. The Dr. Pothole prescription for road repair provides ‘quick relief’ for business owners by filling potholes, cracks, oil pitting, trenched surfaces, and failed joints in about 20 minutes.
Working in the Maryland-D.C.-Virginia area, Dr. Pothole’s two-man teams use infrared technology to penetrate the road surface deep down through the damaged area to the ‘heart’ of the pothole. The heat creates a strong thermal bond between the surrounding road surface and the new repair to affect a durable, permanent mend.
“Most businesses that offer repair services are actually asphalt paving companies,” comments Zeeshan Kaba, Dr. Pothole’s Vice President of Operations. “We specialize exclusively in road pothole repair and that is what led us to develop a heat-based methodology that surpasses the results of a traditional saw-cut approach and can be utilized year-round.
Dr. Pothole is also turning up the heat on the competition with prices that are approximately 65% less than a traditional repair solution. “The cost of a 3 x 6 pothole repair is typically around $199” reports Kaba.
Bottom Line Friendly and Mother Nature Approved
Central to Dr. Pothole’s competitive advantage is the KM 8000T trailer and asphalt hotbox reclaimer. When new asphalt is unavailable, stockpiled material can be loaded in the KM 8000T and recycled. Within 12 hours hard, cold chunked asphalt is ‘reclaimed’ into usable hot mix which can be kept at working temperature for up to three days.
“Our method keeps waste out of the landfill and also keeps haul-away trucks off the road, says Kaba. “This reduces the need for excess gasoline and eliminates emissions from that disposal truck.” And while the storage capacity for typical asphalt repair trailers is 360 lbs, the KM 8000T can store four tons of asphalt at once, so the equipment can remain onsite for the duration of the repair.
From a green perspective, it takes 11 trees required to absorb the carbon dioxide release and ‘clean’ the air from pothole repairs done in the traditional way. The Dr. Pothole method releases approximately 4.2 kilos which can be counteracted by a single tree. In comparison, traditional methods release approximately 52 kilos of CO2 per repair.
Never Too Cold for Road Repair
“Because of the challenges presented by frozen ground, road pothole repairs are often delayed until spring and summer months,” explains Kaba. “And the longer the problem goes unaddressed, the more likely it is for a pothole or crack to deepen and get worse.” He notes that Dr. Pothole’s infrared technology heats the ground three to five inches deep to a temperature of 390 degrees so both hot mixed asphalt and cold-mixed asphalt can be used to effect repairs year-round.
“Our crews are available for assignments 365 days per year. We can repair a 3 x 6 pothole in just 20 minutes on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day, or Thanksgiving night so a store can be open for business on ‘Black Friday,’” says Kaba with pride. This is especially meaningful for retailers, restaurateurs, movie theatre owners, and other companies who can’t afford to lose peak holiday traffic because low temperatures split open asphalt and make roads impassable.
The High Cost of Unrepaired Potholes
Potholes are not only visually unattractive and an impediment to business profits, they are “vexing and nerve-rattling to motorists (and) a significant threat to the safety of motorists and pedestrians,” Martha M. Meade, AAA Mid-Atlantic’s Manager of Public and Government Affairs told WLS television in Virginia. “Hitting a pothole can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles possibly resulting in a crash, and swerving to avoid a pothole can be just as dangerous.”
About 500,000 insurance claims are filed each year for pothole damage, according to the Independent Insurance Agents of America. “This makes potholes a liability problem that business owners can’t afford to ignore,” says Kaba.
