Los Angeles, CA - October 18, 2010 -- What are you going to get that special someone for Christmas this year? Busy professionals who love pop culture, entertainment and literature are opting for audio books on CD as a cost-efficient means to read books while on the go.
Audio books have been around since 1932, when the United States Congress approved funding and programs to assist blind people with their desires to read. Today the audio book market is becoming a billion dollar market serving every imaginable niche.
"Audio books on CD are a wonderful way for a busy professional, family or child to participate in the storytelling tradition that is central to the world of great literature," said John Goodwin, President of Galaxy Press. "Stories offer a wonderful means to escape and taste worlds of rich adventure, as well as learn important lessons about dreams and values."
What is the best book you have ever read? Chances are it is available as an audio book on CD. Dickens, Shakespeare, Twain - all have been resurrected through the incredible skills of voice actors and sound engineers, responsible for bringing great literature to life.
"We are so proud of the award-winning actors and actresses who have worked with us on this project. Their remarkable voice work has created a memorable array of characters that really make these stories come to life. They have produced remarkable works of art that is receiving rave reviews from listeners," said Goodwin.
Over 80 actors have worked on this project including : Bruce Boxleitner, Karen Black, Tom Kenny, Charles Durning and Jim Meskimen.
Book publisher Galaxy Press is offering free eBook downloads of original pulp fiction stories written in the 1930's and 1940's by author L. Ron Hubbard. Since hitting the web just a few months ago, over 85,000 eBooks have been downloaded online from the series, Stories From the Golden Age.
A short video introduction to the Stories From the Golden Age series, entitled "The Pulp Revival", can be seen on the Golden Age Stories YouTube page at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8RKKlt35ek
Stories From the Golden Age is a collection of 153 stories that have been reproduced in their original format, as both a trade paperback using original pulp artwork and inside illustrations, and as unabridged, multicast audiobooks with original music and fully produced, movie-like sound effects. The first round of eBooks is now available through the iPad bookstore, Amazon.com, BarnesAndNoble.com and on the Stories from the Golden Age website at http://GoldenAgeStories.com/audiobooks
These classic stories from the 1930's and 40's have been generating rave reviews, including this one from Publishers Weekly:
"Demonstrating his unique ability to relate even the most complicated story with a keen eye for detail and realism, Hubbard's stunning writing ability and creative imagination set him apart as one of the greatest literary figures of the 20th century."
Like other great pulp fiction writers that included names whose characters we have come to appreciate such as Edgar Rice Burroughs (Tarzan), Raymond Chandler (Philip Marlowe), Agatha Christie (Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple) and Dashiell Hammett (Sam Spade), L. Ron Hubbard rapidly became a mainstay of popular fiction in the 20th century. However, Hubbard was unlike most authors of the day, as his stories covered a wide spectrum of genres, including adventure, westerns, mystery, detective, fantasy, science fiction and even some romance, using his own and 15 pen names.
