"Competitive Renewable Energy Zones in Texas"
Texas is the largest renewable energy market in the US with largest wind power installed capacity standing at 7,118MW in 2008. This tremendous development in renewable energy market in the state was triggered in 2005, after the introduction of Senate Bill 7, which established the Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) for the state. Texas exceeded the targets specified under this RPS program with majority of development coming form wind power. Texas is well endowed with the rich wind resources, which when coupled with the government support made huge progress. Soon after the establishment of RPS in 2005, the only challenge faced by the Texas’s renewable energy market was the inadequate transmission infrastructure to contain the growth and transmit electricity from remote areas to the areas with high demand. To address this concern, the state government introduced the Senate Bill 20 in 2006, which not only extended the RPS target to 5,880 MW of renewable power by 2015, but also made the provision for the planned development of the transmission lines in the areas where there were no areas which required transmission extension.
