As Halloween approaches, people all around the world are getting prepared for a night of spooks and fun. Halloween has Celtic roots and is celebrated with increasing popularity in the United Kingdom. With that popularity however, increasing consumerism and waste is generated.
Halloween is fast becoming one of the biggest eco nightmares in terms of the associated packaging and waste that is generated. While we do not celebrate it to the scale of the United States and Canada, Halloween products and marketing is ramping up here in the United Kingdom. Statistics show that in the United States $6.5 billion is spent of Halloween costumes, sweets, decorations and associated products while in Canada it stands at $1.5 billion. What makes these figures staggering is that it is an annual spend and that year on year more products are bought to replace items that are largely disposed of after one use.
In the United Kingdom, we are a thriftier nation that does do some recycling and look at eco friendly alternatives, but our Halloween spending has been rising steadily over the last decade. In 2001 we spent approximately £12 million but by 2010 this figure is expected to rise to £280 million.
