We at netcallidus were sad to learn of Brittany Murphy's premature death at just 32 – we're all big fans of some of the work she's done and films she starred in. The actress, who died on December 20 of a suspected heart attack, will be sadly missed – a light doused before her time.

However, we were disgusted to read only this morning of increasing numbers of black hat spammers and scammers taking advantage of the actress' death to promote their malware by creating fake news listings that take the user to a page where fake system warning pop ups appear. Users are then told the only way to clear their systems is to buy some 'anti virus' software that actually does nothing at all except cost the user money.

News of Murphy's death broke on December 20, and between the hours of 8am (PST) that day until 10pm (PST) on December 21, Google reported a huge spike in queries relating to the actress. Within the results coming up, these malicious links were promoted by black hatters to encourage users to click through and buy the malware. Using legitimate websites, the spammers were posing comments with a link back to the misleading domains, which is known as comment spamming. The same method was used on forums and blogs. The term 'Brittany Murphy death' was among the top targeted queries relating to the actress.

Of course, this isn't the only time this has happened – when Michael Jackson died, within hours these sorts of links were popping up everywhere in results linked to the singer. This is not only disgraceful, but very disrespectful to the families and friends related to the person concerned. The latest news regarding Tiger Woods was also affected.

The best way to avoid becoming entangled in one of these websites – which often feature more than one pop up and in some cases actually try to install rogue software onto a users PC without permission, is to use trusted news sources and type the URL in directly to the browser bar to avoid accidentally clicking through to bad websites. It has been predicted by various online security vendors that this type of black hat may actually be on the rise through 2010, and therefore extra care should be taken when browsing on these sorts of topics.
