In March 2008 Google began to test the addition of a search box within the search engine results page. The idea of this function was to help users going to website such as IMDB (internet movie database) which are essentially catalogues that a user goes to search for information, essentially cutting out the middle man. However many felt that the results of these search boxes left something to be desired.

Many criticised the results page that appeared when using this search method. One problem is the lack of an image, which is not desirable when searching a site for a specific product or item, and the top results for the searches will often only lead you to the actual sites search page should you have done an identical search on the actual site. The fact that many of these websites will already have a search field for their products, and will be optimised to allow users to navigate their site in the best way possible.

Despite the negatives found with the search box’s existing within the SERP it was alleged that this new function was increasing website traffic in actual fact, with some people claiming it doubled their web traffic. However there is no official proof of this and it was nothing more than speculation, and it was speculation that didn’t seem to be supported by the actions of mainstream retailers such as Amazon who requested that the search box be removed from their results on SERP.

Nearly a year and a half later Google seems to have dropped the search box from the majority of its SERP results, where it used to show up for sites such as eBay and imdb, it does not anymore. A rather long winded test for an addition to Google that has had varied levels of success, and as for those sites that allegedly received a great deal more traffic from this new function this could well spell a very negative effect for one or two sites in the new future, but only time will tell.
