Mr. Justin C.K. Tai, Director, Taiwan Trade Centre Bangkok Office reveals at the press conference that Taiwan, the world's fifth-largest producer of machine tools, plays an influential role in the international market because it exports nearly 75% of its output.
Taiwan is poised to become an even more important player in the machine tool industry now that it has vastly improved relations with China.Taiwan’s trade with the mainland is expected to grow after the two sides’ formally implement the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) next year, thanks to the efforts of Taiwan’s current administration under President Ma Ying-jeou.
“Taiwan's machine tool industry is gaining in prominence as it is growing a forecast 50% this year to reach about US$4 billion in production. In 2011, growth is expected to exceed 20% to top US$5 billion, making Taiwan the world's fourth largest machine-tool producer. Forecasters even say that the Taiwan industry may reach a production value of US$7 billion by 2015, taking the No. 3 rank after Japan and Germany.” Mr. Tai said.
“Those growth expectations depend to a large part on Taiwan’s exports to China. Between 2011 and 2015, Taiwan expects to ship US$6.5 billion worth of machine tools to China, its largest export market. Western Europe is likely to become Taiwan’s second-largest market for Taiwan with purchases of US$3.2 billion during the next five years. Southeast Asia, Southern Europe and North America are also forecast to be key markets, each accounting for NT$2.3 billion in purchases from Taiwan during the next five years.”
Mr. Gary Yang, Director, Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI) added that Taiwan’s machine tool exports to ASEAN rose by 77 percent during the first eight months of this year to US$256.8 million, according to DGBAS statistics. The fastest growing markets in ASEAN during the period were Indonesia and Malaysia, each of which had increases exceeding 100 percent, the DGBAS figures showed Metal lathes and machining centers were important contributors to growth in both markets.
“The key products behind Taiwan's growth story worldwide are metal cutting machines such as machining centers and lathes, which account for more than 70% of exports. Europe and the Americas have increased purchases of machining centers and lathes from Taiwan. Exports of NC lathes have grown significantly in the last three years, achieving an average annual growth of 26.3%, followed by machining centers with average growth of 16.5% per year.”
“Between 2011 and 2015, Taiwan’s machine tool exports are expected to consist mainly of machining centers, reaching about US$9.4 billion and lathes at US$6.7 billion. In addition, metal forming machine tools will be worth US$5 billion during the period. Drilling machines and tapping centers will also be key products. Taiwan expects to become a major supplier of multi-axis drilling machines and tapping centers, achieving about US$3 billion in exports in the next five years.”
Thailand is the largest market in the ASEAN region for Taiwan machine tools. During the first eight months of this year, Thailand’s imports of machine tools from Taiwan rose by 69 percent from the same period a year earlier to US$74.1 million, according to statistics from Taiwan’s Directorate General of Customs (DGBAS), Ministry of Finance. Metal lathes were the fastest growing machine tool category, increasing by more than 224 percent during the period.
