Seattle, WA, November 23, 2010 -- Robert Stanek has been dreaming up stories since he was a boy, but it was only since the early 1990’s that his work began to get published. As a technology journalist, Robert (writing as William R. Stanek) has written for PC Magazine, Dr. Dobbs, TechNet Magazine and a variety of other leading magazines. As a technology writer, he’s has written for Simon & Schuster, Random House, Macmillan, Pearson, Microsoft, O’Reilly and other publishers. Of that, he says, “My many technical articles and technical books have helped millions of readers learn essential job skills and stay competitive. That’s important, especially in these troubling economic times.
"My children’s books are helping kids learn essential life skills. The Bugville books provide stories that address real issues and challenges children face as they start school, make friends, and learn about the world around them. Each book provides a positive lesson about life, friendship, family, our world, the natural world of which we are all a part, and our environment."
The Bugville Learning Adventures started with Buster Bee’s Adventures with Letters and Words, a 28-page picture book first published in 2007 featuring Buster as a reluctant learner who wanted to help other children learn the alphabet and sounds for reading. Buster made the words and sounds the star as much as anything else as he did the cha cha, grrr’d and brrr’d his way through pirate pigeon steps and more. The book was a hit in both print and audio and continues to be one of the top-selling Bugville titles.
Robert Stanek followed up that book with several other “Learning Adventures” including Every Day is Different and Catching a Cup of Sunshine. Now Reagent Press launches an official Bugville Publishing imprint and a line of “Learning Adventures” books. Four books, with simultaneous official publication on December 1, 2010, start the series. The books feature the reader favorite “Super Buster” as he helps children learn new concepts. Debuting first in digital, the books are fun, innovative, and irreverent.
The 52-page, full-color book, Racing Super Buster Counts And You Can Too, kick starts the series expansion. It’s a counting book that takes readers to some non-traditional places as it introduces traditional counting concepts. The book includes parent tips for advancing readers and getting more out of subsequent readings. Young children can work on number recognition and counting skills. Older children can work on sequencing, grouping, and number sense.
The 60-page, Racing Super Buster Letters (And You Can Too) follows. It an alphabet book but different than almost anything else and it includes tips for advancing readers and getting more out of subsequent readings. Young children can work on letter recognition (both uppercase and lower case letters). Older children can work on letter order, letter sense, and letter sounds in words.
The 56-page Racing Super Buster Shapes (And You Can Too) is next. This book twists the traditional shape recognition book on its head to provide a fun and funny book about shapes. Young children can work on shape recognition. Older children can work on shape sense, matching, and comparison.
The 62-page Racing Super Buster Counts Higher (And You Can Too) completes the offering. The book takes readers beyond basic number skills to more advanced counting. Young children can work on number recognition, counting to 20 and counting to 100 by tens. Older children can work on sequencing, number sense, and counting to 100. Like its predecessors it uses some non-traditional approaches to teach traditional concepts.
Robert Stanek quietly worked on the Bugville Critters for 15 years, satisfied with only the gleeful cheers, laughs and giggles of his children who delighted to hear his tales of Bugville and a little bug called Buster. As his children got older, they urged him to get the books published so other children could enjoy them as much as they did, and that’s exactly what Robert Stanek set out to do in 2004.
As a young child, Robert Stanek’s family was very poor. He was one of five children raised by a single mom. Books allowed Robert to escape the poverty and violence that filled his early life. “I learned so much from books,” says author Robert Stanek. “Without books to escape into as a child, I don’t know what I would have done. To me, each book was a magical window and I wanted to create that same sense of wonder in my books.”
