Mesothelioma and asbestosis affects over 10,000 people each year with over 75% of the cases linked directly to the patients previous work history. Unfortunately, asbestos was common in the work place as well as in home building materials only a few decades ago. Below is how one man recounts how asbestos affected his life.
“I was beside myself when I was diagnosed four years ago with mesothelioma. I had spent a large part of my working life in the building industry beginning before the dangers of asbestos were openly published. Sure, I worried about exposure, but I had a family to support, so I had to take the good with the bad and hope for the best. The scary part with this killer is it may not exhibit any symptoms for 20-50 years after exposure. My oncologist told me the only reason I was able to beat the odds is because I had my own fears about the substance and insisted on an annual screening for mesothelioma.
I went many years without any signs of the disease in my lungs, stomach or any other place it might affect. I was beginning to think I had escaped the effects of the asbestos and was going to stop having the screenings when tests revealed early signs of the disease. They diagnosed me with peritoneal mesothelioma and set me up on a treatment plan that included chemotherapy and immunotherapy. They weren’t sure of my prognosis, but I’m still here and at my last screening they were said it was looking better and no other organs were affected.
Since I was a sub-contractor, it was difficult for me to track down the companies for which I worked. Instead at the insistence of my lawyer I went for the asbestos manufacturer. The company initially tried to claim there was no proof it was the asbestos that caused my mesothelioma, but my lawyer had lined up enough medical evidence by the time we went to court to make them back down. In the end I received $810,000 and am fortunately still here to enjoy it thanks to early intervention and modern medicine.”
