Singapore is a focal point for world-class talents. Its government understands that the human resources are invaluable. Thus, it attracts skilled individuals to work in Singapore. Working in Singapore requires a possession of a working visa.
A Singapore Employment Pass is the primary working visa issued by the Ministry of Manpower so foreigners can work for a Singapore company. It is classified into P1, P2, and Q1 passes. According to a representative of Asiabizservices, foreigners can apply for an Employment Pass if they are seeking for employment or being offered an employment in a Singapore company.
The same thing can be said of foreign company’s shareholders and directors seeking for relocation to Singapore and being employed by their corporation. Under this category, the Ministry of Manpower stipulates that if the company is less than 6 months old following its incorporation and the shareholder owns less than 30% of the company shares, an Employment Pass can be obtained.;
Should the company is less than 6 months old from the point of its incorporation and the shareholder owns more than 30% of the company shares, an Entrepreneur Pass is recommended. However, under certain circumstances, an Employment Pass can be issued to a shareholder.
Asiabizservices further says that if the company is older than 6 months, “all its directors and shareholders regardless of the shares they hold in a company may apply for an Employment Pass.”
The eligibility requirements of an Employment Pass include a tertiary level of educational attainment from a prestigious university or collegiate institution, professional and/or specialization skills coupled with years of related work experience, and earning a fixed monthly income.
Depending on the amount of income earned monthly, the Employment Pass is classified further as Q1 for a requirement of S$2,500 plus 5 years of relevant work experience, P1 for a requirement of S$3,500, and P2 for a requirement of S$7,000.
“All P pass holders must have held previous or hold current position such as a manager, executive officer, and a specialist in a certain area,” Asiabizservices continues elaborating.
The required documents foreigners should prepare are completed application form 8, a hard copy of Original Transcript of Records, educational certificates, certificate of employment and or employment testimonials; hard copy of resume or curriculum vitae, detailed job description of the applicant upon commencing employment in Singapore.
Also accompanying these documents are a hard copy of the personal information page of the applicant’s passport or travel documents, applicant’s passport-sized photo taken in the last 3 months, a hard copy of the Business Profile/Registration papers of the employing Singapore company, if applicable, and detailed description of activities, products and or services offered by the employing Singapore company, if applicable.
The timeline for the issuance of the Employment Pass varies. Asiabizservices elaborates further, saying the status of the Singapore employment pass application can be known shortly or quite awhile depending on how the documents are forwarded.
“For application forwarded through a website, the Ministry of Manpower shall provide the status between 1 and 10 days,” Asiabizservices states in conclusion, “for application submitted manually, the Ministry of Manpower shall take 3 to 5 weeks before it releases the application status.”
