The Haynesville shale is evolving in to one of the major natural gas producing fields in the US. The production from the Haynesville shale increased from 0.4bcfe (billion cubic feet equivalent) in 2007 to 410.9bcfe in 2009 at an AAGR (average annual growth rate) of 346.7%.
With increasing Initial Production (IP) rates and improving well performance, the shale play would continue to remain a major source of natural gas supply in the US. The production from the play is expected to increase from 410.9bcfe in 2009 to 2,328.4bcfe in 2020 at an AAGR of 15.8%.

International natural gas prices have been hovering around $3.5-$4.5 per Million Metric British Thermal Units (MMBtu). Despite low international prices of natural gas since late 2008, drilling activities in the Haynesville shale play have continued to increase. The number of well permits in the Haynesville Shale, Louisiana, increased from 200 in 2008 to 963 in November 2010, indicating the increased interest of companies in the shale play. Over the past two years, the growth in the number of wells permitted increased by 64%, despite the low natural gas prices.
Rapidly increasing natural gas production from the Haynesville shale has also mandated investments into the infrastructure expansion in the region. Among some of recent infrastructure developments in the shale play, Energy Transfer Partners LP just completed and put into service the ETC Tiger Pipeline. The pipeline would provide takeaway capacity from the East Texas Carthage Hub area and the Haynesville Shale play. Enterprise Products Partners LP and Duncan Energy Partners are developing a 249-mile Haynesville Extension pipeline which would have a transportation capacity of up to 2.1bcf/d (billion cubic feet per day) of natural gas. This pipeline would extend from the Haynesville region to interconnect with interstate pipelines in central Louisiana and with the company’s Acadian Gas System. The pipeline is expected to be placed into service during the third quarter of 2011. Enbridge Energy Partners is expanding the company's natural gas gathering system in East Texas that serves the Haynesville Shale. The company would spend $142m to add capacity of 900 MMcf/d (million cubic feet per day) to its system.
