Europe and Middle East is a large market for butadiene. Currently, Europe and Middle East together are responsible for around 34% of the global butadiene demand. The recent global economic downturn has impacted European nations more than the Middle East countries. As a result, the demand growth in Europe has been very slow in the past two years and has declined in some countries. Middle Eastern demand for butadiene is growing significantly but is much smaller in volume compared to European demand. Butadiene is largely used in the production of Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR), which is used to manufacture automobile tires. Other polymers made from butadiene include Styrene-Butadiene (SB) copolymer latex, which is used in paper coatings, carpet back coatings, foam mattresses and adhesives. Styrene butadiene latex accounts for 12.5% of the Asia-Pacific butadiene demand. Adiponitrile is one of the important chemical intermediates manufactured from butadiene. It holds 3.2% share of the region’s demand.
