Businesses in Hull learn the internet “SEO dark arts” thanks to local business networking group.
On Friday 18th February at the Pearson Park Hotel, local businesses got the chance to “look behind the curtain” into the field of internet marketing which is often considered by many as something of a “dark art”.

The event run by the East Yorkshire Business for Breakfast group, and presented by Neogain Limited, an internet marketing agency based in South Cave, covered the practice of SEO, or “Search Engine Optimisation” and offered attendees to learn the theory and then put it into practice. SEO is carried out by making adjustments to a website the will be favourable to search engines such as Google, and by building links with other related websites, with the aim of appearing higher in the rankings for keywords that are relevant to a site’s products or services.
“Because there is so much mystery surrounding strategies used to help websites get more exposure in the search engines, we encounter many businesses that are sceptical of the benefits an SEO campaign can yield” said Mike Jones, Creative Director at Neogain. “We hope that by offering some insight into what we actually do, and helping businesses develop the skills internally, we can dispel some of the myths and allow businesses to help themselves”, he continued.
The event was the brainchild of Mark Luscombe, Regional Director for Business for Breakfast, a new networking group founded in Hull in October 2010. “During one of our breakfast meeting’s, Neogain was given the opportunity to showcase their business to the other members. Mike gave our members some really good tips on improving their website’s rankings and it was clear that businesses really valued the information provided”, said Mark.
Business for Breakfast, a national organisation, promote themselves as offering members the opportunity to build “know, like and trust” relationships. John Fisher, founder of BforB also attended the workshop. “By offering this kind of additional training free of charge to our members, we really feel we are adding value to business networking that is both tangible and effective business development” commented Mr Fisher.
Businesses not directly involved with BforB were also invited to the workshop for a small fee. Among those attending were representatives of Princes Quay, Jenko and Lorrimar Weighing. All attendee’s reported being really pleased with the skills they had learnt and felt confident putting them into practice in their own industries.
Mike Jones also commented, “I think the broad range of companies attending the course just goes to show how all kinds of businesses are looking to the internet to drive sales and enquiries regardless of their sector. The fact is nearly all businesses can benefit from internet marketing and I think the businesses using online strategies are gaining a real competitive edge despite the current economic climate”.
Following on from the success of the workshop Neogain has committed to offer more training events for local businesses and is in discussion with local charities with a view to using the events to help raise funds.
