DALLAS (March 17, 2011) –John Langdoc, shareholder at the mesothelioma law firm of Baron & Budd, P.C. is warning homeowners about the potential dangers of asbestos exposure in older homes. Even though a home update can result in a more economical and “green” home, people considering renovations should use caution as asbestos could be lurking in the home’s original building materials.
“Asbestos use was common in many building materials through the 1970s, even in residential homes,” said mesothelioma attorney John Langdoc. “When left alone, the asbestos isn’t harmful, but once disturbed, such as during renovation, asbestos fibers become airborne. Then the fibers can be inhaled and lodged in the lungs. This is a type of asbestos exposure that, decades later, can develop into asbestos cancers such as mesothelioma.”
Some common areas of the home where asbestos may be present include joint compounds, piping, roofing materials and floor tiles.
“When renovating an older home, it’s important for homeowners to take the necessary precautions to check for asbestos prior to starting any renovations,” said John Langdoc. “If you find that your home does have asbestos in it, it should be properly removed before beginning renovations.”
While many people think that asbestos is still a thing of the past, its use has not been banned in the United States. In fact, even today, asbestos is still used in a number of products in the U.S. including auto parts and certain construction materials. The mesothelioma law firm of Baron & Budd has been defending the rights of asbestos cancer sufferers and their families for more than 30 years and has been at the forefront of asbestos litigation. In fact, Baron & Budd was among the first law firms to successfully litigate an asbestos lawsuit.
