March 30th 2011 - In just 42 days, the Norwich-based colocation specialist, Sentry42, will open its newly refurbished Gatehouse Data Centre.
The importance of this numerical milestone has not been lost on the Sentry42 team after all ‘42’ appears throughout history, culture and science as a number of some significance.
Alice in Wonderland’s author Lewis Carroll referenced the number ‘42’ throughout his published works and the debate as to whether the number was used by the him as some kind of code continues today. Remember ‘Rule Forty-two’ in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland? All persons more than a mile high to leave the court!
The significance of the number ‘42’ has since been famously compounded by Douglas Adams in his novel and radio series ’The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy’ in which the it is identified as the ultimate answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. Although we have the answer, unfortunately, the ultimate question remains unknown.
At the risk of appearing obsessive, when you start to look there are references to ‘42’ everywhere. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the heroine is given a potion that puts her in a death-like coma for ‘two and forty hours’. There are 42 laws in cricket. 42 is the name of Buzz Lightyear's space ship. Red blood cells have a shelf life up to 42 days. There’s the BBC TV series ‘The Kumars at No. 42’. Perhaps most eerily, the remains of a woman were found in Croatia sitting in front of her TV 42 years after she was reported missing. Apparently HedvigaGolik had made herself a cup of tea before sitting in her favourite armchair in front of her black and white television and died. Police said she was last seen by neighbours in 1966, when she would have been 42 years old!
42 days could have been a lifetime for the twenty-nine survivors of the US warship Liberty which was torpedoed in the South Atlantic in 1943. Packed into a single lifeboat with minimal food and water they survived an astonishing 42 days at sea, sailing more than 2,500 miles before being picked up off the coast of Brazil. It remains one of the longest open-boat voyages in history.
Sentry42's Gatehouse Data Centre will open to customers in just 42 days, on May 11th.
