Raleigh, NC – April 06, 2011 -- On March 15th, two local high school students were presented with a $1000 check and congratulated as the winners of the 2011 Tarheel Swimming Association and Pool Professionals Annual Partnership Scholarship.
The scholarship, now in its 10th year, recognizes swimmers and coaches who best demonstrate the core values of leadership, team spirit, enthusiastic participation and dedication to the TSA.
Each year, Pool Professionals assembles a scholarship committee to review the applicants and chose scholarship recipients. This year’s winners were 18-year-old Katie Donahue and 18-year-old Emily Facchine.
Katie Donahue, a senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School, has been swimming with the TSA for the past 12 years, since she was just 6-years-old. This life-long member of the Prestonwood Piranha’s dreamed of being a coach from the age of ten. A year ago, she to fulfilled that dream when she became a Junior Coach. Katie is also Vice President of the National Honor Society, and captain of the swim team and girls golf team at Cardinal Gibbons.
"Katie’s maturity and drive to succeed was evident from the beginning of the process. She will continue to be a strong leader where ever she ends up," said Pool Professionals President and Founder, David Harvey.
Emily Facchine, a senior at Enloe High School, has been swimming with the TSA for the past 13 years, but she has been a dedicated fan of the Dutchman Downs swim team ever since she can remember. "Before I was old enough to swim, I was cheering for my older sister at the meets, and staying up late to go out to pizza afterwards."
Emily’s swim coach said, "Her example to the younger swimmers demonstrates the benefits of hard work and challenging yourself in and out of the pool."
David Harvey added, "We had a lot of great candidates this year, but Emily’s dedication to the sport, and more importantly to her team, really made her stand out."
