The Nature/Culture Divide in Nicolette Benjamin Black's Art at Agora Gallery
Nicolette Benjamin Black is a contemporary artist who is very influenced by the Australian Aboriginal art movements' use of the dot, dash and stroke art-making methods. She loves the simplicity of the mark, believing that a single mark makes the difference on paper as a single person makes a difference to anything in a democracy.

Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature Australian artist, Nicolette Benjamin Black, in Out from Down Under & Beyond: Fine Art from Australia and New Zealand. The exhibition is scheduled to run from May 12, 2011 through June 1, 2011 (opening reception: Thursday, May 12, 2011).
About the Artist
Nicolette Benjamin Black’s finely detailed drawings depict the restorative delicacy of nature amidst the devastation of late consumer capitalism. Responding to Western society’s addiction to consumer goods, Benjamin Black is a multidisciplinary artist working in a range of mediums such as watercolor, gouache, ink, ball point pen and sculpted paper to render faintly apocalyptic snapshots of contemporary environmental phenomena. Influenced by the Australian Aboriginal Artist’s connectedness to their land, Benjamin Black often draws onto paper she has crafted from plant fiber or old clothing. Despite its critical subject matter the visual impact of the image is sweetly, softly discovered – filled with wispy shadows and crisp pockets of light, Benjamin Black’s paintings and drawings are as ephemeral and jubilant as the source from which they come.
Nicolette Benjamin Black was born in 1955 in Canberra, Australia and is of European, Jewish and Australian heritage. She currently creates art in her homeland of Canberra where she lives with her husband on a 10 acre sustainable farm.
