While it is a relatively new device in household furniture the rise and reline chair is presently an important item in the homes of many people. The lives of thousands of people who suffer through serious mobility conditions are aided by the electric lift chair, or riser recliner, as it is also known.
How did the rise and recline chair come to be evolved and where was if fabricated? The beginning of the first recliner can be traced back to when its development started in 1928.
The Evolution of Recliners
It was in 1927 in Michigan that cousins Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker set up their innovative furniture company, and a year later they got a patent for the first reclining chair. This consisted of a standard chair that was modified so that the back reclined and the seat slid forward.
Indeed, as far back as the 18th century recliners have existed, as is shown by the account that says that Napoleon III owned a chair that reclined into a camp styled cot, in which he sat and slept.
Although that was the case, the cousins obtained the first patent and, subsequently, that model became extremely popular. They followed it up with a padded model, and as early as 1931 they had a patent for the first automatic recliner.
They then changed the company name to La-Z-Boy, which is still in existence now, and they started to face competition from other companies, notably Barcalounger, which was the first to add a built-in foot rest in 1947.
How Rise and Recline Chairs Were Made
Even though rise and recline chairs began with those early design recliners, the current models have advanced far beyond those. But, interestingly, it wasn't until sometime in the 1980's that the first contemporary rise and recline chairs began to emerge on the market, however, the actual date of that first modern model is still unknown.
One thing that is apparent, however, is that as soon as the chairs proceeded to appear they became hugely popular. People with mobility problems suddenly found that they could sit-down and get-up much easier, which was better than anything that had happened before.
But the earlier models were far from perfect. Safety issues overshadowed their triumphs, mainly due to the fact that most of the early styles consisted of nothing more than a standard recliner fitted with a spring lifting system. This placed the frames under undue stress, leading to a jerky, uncomfortable user experience as well as a number of incidents.
Rise and Recline Chairs in Present Times
Thankfully, things have changed and today's rise and recline chairs are far superior to the earlier versions. In the past 25 years these recliners have become much safer, stronger, easier to utilize, and have enhanced functionality.
