What Should the Resume of an Administrative Assistant Look Like?

Many people are not clear about what exactly are a resume and a CV, i.e., curriculum vitae. It is crucial to know the difference between these both as it is the most mistakenly inter-linked documents that people get confused with. So here we go…

What is a Resume?

A resume is a document that mentions your educational, work history, co curricular activities, hobbies, achievements in various fields, etc., whereas a CV is just a document that states your educational qualifications. In a resume, you can mention what awards you have fetched in your previous companies, what responsibilities you have shouldered, what tasks you have undertaken, what you have achieved distinguishably, etc.

Parts of a Resume

The resume consists of the following parts:

Contact Details
This section has the personal details like your address and contact numbers.

Objective
The objective of a resume is the thing that attracts a lot of attention and often is the factor that is considered as the most impressionable. So be careful as to how you project yourself and what you wish to convey. You can be bold and state your ambitions, but at the same time be well prepared with the questions that you will come across in the interview.

Note: In the following two sections, you need to mention the details in the ‘reverse chronological’ order which means that the latest work experience of the latest degree or certificate acquired needs to be mentioned first and then followed by the lesser recent ones.

Work History
This section is, as the name suggests, self-explanatory. It consists of where have you worked and gained experience. What post did you hold in the organization and were responsible for what all things, etc. Do mention if you have bagged any awards or certificates too.

Education
Here, as mentioned above, keeping in mind the ‘latest first’ order, mention the courses you have done.

Co-Curricular / Social Activities / Hobbies
This section is the main part of a resume and that is what makes it different from the curriculum vitae. You get a chance here to highlight your strong points through your interests and what activities you involve in. This considerably speaks volumes about your personality.

Also, ensure that you mention and highlight things that are related to the job you are applying for. That is why it is said that you have to keep updating your resume. Be it administrative assistant resume or any other for that matter.

Format of Resume
The format for the resume is very simple and has to be devoid of decoration of any sort. Maintain the subheads as mentioned in this write up and just give out your details.

Try to keep it short and to the point. Do not include irrelevant things. You might risk your position or the first impression if you mention things that are not even remotely related to the profile you are applying for.
