21st May 2011: When turning the golden pages of the past, we unearth the precious gems embedded in the rich history of our land. Born on 26 July 1874, Shahuji Maharaja was an invaluable gem in the history of Kolhapur, his shine bestowed on the glory times of yore. Also known as Chatrapati Shahuji Maharaj, he was the first Maharaja of the Indian princely state of Kolhapur between 1884 and 1922. The government of India hails Shahuji Maharaja as "A social revolutionary, a true democrat, a visionary, a patron of the theatre, music and sports and a prince of the masses. He was credited for his social reforms and his actions for the upliftment of women, children and the masses. His support in fortifying the lower cast has been remarkable. He gave importance to primary education as he believed that it is the base of an individual’s progress. He not only subsidized education in his state eventually providing free education to all, he also opened several hostels in Kolhapur thereby facilitating the education of the rural and low-caste indigent. His efforts in empowering women have been idolized by many. He restricted child marriage in his state and the encouraged intercaste and widow remarriage. He also played a major role in the famous Non-Brahmin movement, where he arranged for several non-Brahmin youths to be trained to function as priests, in defiance to timeless convention which reserved the priesthood for those of the Brahmin caste only.
