Montreal, Quebec, May 19th, 2011– Hilbroy Advisory Inc. (DeutcheBörse: 2H0) Hilbroy Advisory Reports: A US Senate panel has approved a bill to create special "enterprise funds" to help the economies of Egypt and Tunisia recover from revolutionary turmoil and showcase Washington's goodwill.
The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the measure by voice vote on Tuesday, a spokesman said Wednesday.
The plan, modeled on a hugely successful effort to help former communist countries in Europe after the Berlin Wall fell, aims to help the two countries at the forefront of the "Arab Spring" movement that has transformed the region.
The legislation would allow President Barack Obama to create private, non-profit organizations to promote private-sector growth as well as good governance and transparency.
The Egyptian-American Enterprise Fund and the Tunisian-American Enterprise Fund would steer investment capital to existing or start-up businesses in both countries, which have seen economically vital tourism monies dry up.
The bill's chief authors were Democratic Senator John Kerry, who chairs the committee, Republican Senator John McCain, and independent Senator Joe Lieberman.
The measure still must clear the full Senate and the House of Representatives before it can go to Obama to sign into law.
