The darkest hour in one’s life comes as you grow and face the real world, but legend has it that the darkest hour only begins from the childhood. Sindhutai Sapkal was brought up in abject poverty, where throughout her childhood she was always belittle and suppressed for a life that every child needs for nurturing. She grew to be the seraph of the ones who had no hope in their lives. By picking orphan children from the streets and giving them a home, today she has three ashrams sheltering around 1000 children. Another 2000 have been married off and some even hold good jobs, Great Bhet gives you an opportunity to know more about this ‘mother to all’ who has been fulfilling the dreams of the children who were made to see no further than their mere survival only on IBN-Lokmat on Saturday, 21st May 2011 at 9:30 pm.
With her nickname "Chindi" meaning torn cloth. Sindhutai Sapkal was named thus as an unwanted child. She could only attend school until 4th grade; she did part-time chores due to other family responsibilities. She was forced for a child marriage to a 30-year-old farmhand at the age of 9, she had only troubled days coming ahead. Finally taking a stand from the much tolerated domestic violence and demeaning abuses, she left home with her infant daughter. She later donated her biological child to the trust Shrimant Dagdu sheth halwai in Pune, only to eliminate the feeling of partiality between her daughter and the adopted ones. In the year 1998 Sindhutai Sapkal had nurtured about 1042 orphaned children. Many of the children that she adopted are well educated lawyers and doctors, and some including her biological daughter are running their independent orphanages. Till date she has been honored by 272 awards.
A lady with the heart of gold and determination of strengthening the very base of every less fortunate child, is something that the world today salutes. To catch this special episode of humanity tune into Great Bhet on IBN-Lokmat on 21st May at 9:30 pm.
