Jackie Paaso started of the 2010/11 season with a few new sponsors, signing on with The North Face, Kastle, Squaw Valley USA and Hi Ball. Jackie was really excited to start her competitive freeskiing season on the Freeride World Tour and had the goal in mind of going for the title. However right from the start it appeared that this would not be Jackie’s season.
Early season in Tahoe was a great one and Paaso started it out by teaming up with Michelle Parker and http://www.UnofficialNetworks.com for a webisode project. There were tons of backcountry trips and Squaw powder days. That project came to an abrupt halt when Michelle heard the news that her boyfriend had ended up in the ICU due to a traumatic brain injury. Despite the grim outlook at the time, Danny is doing better than expected. Visit http://www.DannyIsTheBomb.com to check out his road to recovery.
Soon after Danny’s accident Paaso found herself on the way to Europe for the first stop of the Freeride World Tour in La Clusaz, France. For Jackie, this would be the beginning of what would be one of the most frustrating comp seasons of her career. After coming off a third place overall ranking in the FWT last year, Paaso was hungry for the FWT title this year. When asked about her 2010/11 FWT showing, Jackie said, “I had one good finish on the tour leading up to the finals in Verbier, a fourth place in Hochfugen, Austria for the third stop of the tour. This however was not going to be enough to put me in to the top five to qualify for the finals.”
As the season went on and disappointment was beginning to set in, the clouds broke and Jackie was invited to the 2011 Red Bull Cold Rush in Silverton, CO. When asked about Red Bull Cold Rush, Paaso said, “It ended up being one of the best contests I had ever been a part of! I didn't end up on top there but I was a part of the coolest contest ever and I was so happy to see other women like Grete Eliassen, Michelle Parker and Suzanne Graham throwing down! My favorite day of the comp by far was the cliffs day.” To see footage of Jackie and the other contestants of Red Bull Cold Rush, visit RedBull on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6_vXfTZH-c
A few days after The Red Bull Cold Rush, Paaso was atop another start gate for the finals of The Freeride World Tour in Verbier Switzerland. While not the finish she is used to, Jackie ended up coming in fourth place, a respectable finish that was just shy of the podium. Upon leaving Switzerland, “I took part in The Red Bull Homerun and 300 person Chinese downhill that took place in Åre, Sweden after the lifts had closed. That was such a good time, although twin tips should be banned from that contest”, stated Paaso.
Soon after, Jackie headed to Rodal, Norway for the final stop of FWT and the Norwegian Championships. The top five women after Verbier had been frozen in the rankings and Rodal was a last chance stop for those skiers on the bubble to secure a spot for the tour next year. When day 1 and day 2 was over, Paaso was the 2011 Norwegian Champion, as well as locking in a spot on the 2012 Freeride World Tour! When asked about the Norway showing, Jackie said, “My first victory and podium of the season had moved me into 6th place in the rankings and helped me secure a spot for next year! It was the best way I could have hoped to finish the season and I'm already looking forward to next season!”.
Jackie would like to thank her sponsors for their support throughout the 2010/11 ski season: The North Face, Kastle, Squaw Valley USA, Electric, Hi Ball, Dal Bello, Bern, TOMS, Unofficial Squaw, WebItDesigns.com, and WIDSIX.com
