The preparation for CAT 2011 is on. Although there are more than 5 months for you to get prepared for the big exam, the time in reality is not much. You have to study many things, and for that you have to study smartly and with proper plan.
At the present juncture there might be many questions coming to your mind. To provide solutions to all the queries of CAT 2011 aspirants MBAUniverse.com has launched CAT 2011 Live Chat series. The first chat was held with Arun Sharma, renowned author of CAT prep books.
The second chat was held on 21 May, 2011 on the topic of ‘Preparing for Verbal Ability’. The expert was Ms. Meenakshi Upadhyay, CAT expert and author of CAT preparation books, which have been published by Tata McGraw-Hill.
The live chat session received questions on various problem areas of the Verbal Ability section. The participants were of all experience level -- those who have taken CAT more than once as well as those who will be taking CAT for the first time.
Excerpts from the Live Expert Chat:
Q: Nilisha Arora: I have just started my preparation. I won't say that I'm weak in VA but for preparation, what are the important components and what should be my time table for VA prep?
A: I am glad to know that you feel confident in your VA section. One thing that I would like you to focus upon is the quality that you put in your preparation instead of the number of hours. Another thing that you should remember is that Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension cannot be prepared overnight. You have to take small steps daily which will help you in the preparation process.
Q: Meenal: What amount of prior preparation should I do before attending classroom coaching? What kind of students typically makes the optimal use of Verbal coaching?
A: Cultivate diverse reading habits and try to improve your vocabulary, because knowing the language perfectly will go a long way in improving your accuracy and comfort level with the paper in the exam. For verbal coaching I would suggest you to do your preparation of improving Verbal Ability together with the problem solving techniques that the teacher would teach you in class. In verbal section, only focusing on problem solving will not help you reach a high level of accuracy. It has to be an optimal mixture of both.
Q: Govind: I have to read a passage thrice to understand it with full concentration. How to improve it and also how to prepare for VA section of CAT?
A: Your problem shows your lack of exposure to reading which is making you read the passage again and again. Try to expose yourself to different books, magazines and newspapers so that you have some awareness about the different areas coupled with reading exposure. For verbal section, vocabulary improvement plays a crucial role.
Q: Karan: What is the basic difference in difficulty level of CAT and MAT’s Verbal Ability section?
A: MAT level English section is comparable to the Bank PO level examinations, whereas the level of CAT verbal section is two levels above it. Also in comparison, the questions in the MAT are more straight forward and easy in comparison to the questions asked in CAT.
Q: Salim: I have completed B.Com (2009) and M.Com (2011) from Hindi medium. My English is not as good as required for MBA. Now I am confused what to do, MBA or any Hindi medium course like journalism etc? Please advise.
A: Salim, it depends upon your interest whether to go for journalism or MBA. One thing that I can tell you is that if you plan to go for MBA, improving your English will take anything between 6 to 12 months, depending upon your current ability. So if you want to do MBA you can definitely improve upon your English and give it a try. You can start with basic school level books in English and then move on to higher level books.
