The GMB union has announced councils across the UK will be making over 160,000 job cuts as a result of the Government’s spending cuts.
Birmingham City council has announced this week it will be making 4,300 redundancies, adding to the 45,000 claimants already in the city. With many other towns and cities facing similar problems Personal Career Solutions have explored the impact this will have on executive level job searchers.
The Government state that private sector growth will counter balance the cuts facing the public sector but statistics published by the CIPD this week show that jobs in the private sector are not increasing at a quick enough pace.
Those facing redundancy or looking to change jobs will be asking how they can navigate such a difficult and over saturated market.
‘You need to do your research,’ says Simon Hudson, career consultant at Personal Career Solutions. ‘Start by searching for company reports detailing growth figures. If the company show up making a loss then your job security is likely to falter early on, if they’re pushing profits then they’re more likely to be recruiting and the job is likely to stick.’
‘Don’t just look for jobs at your level either. If a company is undergoing a recruitment drive for lower level positions then jobs are actively being created and the organisation obviously has some money to spend.’
If you find a company you would like to work for and they are publishing profits Simon highlights it is integral to start networking with them. ‘Joe Bloggs Accountants may not be advertising vacancies but that’s not to say they won’t be in a months time. If someone in the organisation already knows you then you will be more likely to gain an interview and even land the role.’
