Surfing is one of the most enjoyable adventure sport and at the same time one of the most technical. As a fact, well documented surfing techniques are things that by many accounts have to be learned and practiced regularly, a call echoed by Former Irish Champion and Pro Surfer John McCarthy of Lahinch Surf School during an exposure workshop about the basic essentials and information on surfing.
John McCarthy who is also one of the most respected surf coaches in Ireland gave a good outline for Madforsport.com on the best practices to be observed by current and upcoming surfers if they are to achieve the level of success that is associated with the sport. In his introductory remark Mr. McCarthy noted that the main foundation of excellent and successful surfing was down to the training and it is the prime responsibility of the games sportsmen and women to seek the training of ISA qualified instructors.
The sporting attire is also very crucial in surfing; as the Irish legend observed, the best attire for the sport should be a nice and fitting wet suit as opposed to a large one. The basic criteria of judging a good wet suit is simply based on its compatibility with your body and physique. As a matter of caution it is widely advisable that surfers should be good swimmers and in the case of beginners, appropriate and skilled surfers should accompany them in their surfing mission.
McCarthy also noted that the most important aspect of surfing that many lovers of the sport seem to ignore is the nature of the prevailing conditions. To many, high currents are the best. It is worth noting that whether to surf entirely depends on the weather. As Mr. McCarthy put in his words, “Check the weather and tides before going out. The weather can change completely within a matter of minutes.”
The world renowned legend was also aware by the fact that all sports come with their risks; the biggest of the risk in surfing is witnessed when surfers on a mission get caught up in ripples of huge waves. As mitigation technique it is was advised to paddle across the wave no matter how hard it may seem but never should any surfer try to go against the wave as the consequences can be disastrous.
On the best surf locations in Ireland, Madforsport recommended the two-mile long beach in Lahinch with its variety of breaks caters for novice, intermediate and experienced surfers. Five miles further south, you will find Spanish Point, another perfect surfing beach. Both are the best surfing location in Ireland and probably the whole of Europe to learn surfing with the advantage of the slower rolling Atlantic waves.
As a concluding remark, the surf maestro from Dublin insisted that the ISA training coaches remained the best picks for surfing schools and their experience will by and large equip both amateur and professional surfers with the appropriate water safety and surfing techniques to help them in their endeavor to emulate his profound success in this adventure sport.
