Cook-Sindelar withdraw from Legends Pro Golf Tournament Due To Back Pain

If you want to know how costly back pain can be just ask pro golfers Joey Sindelar and John Cook. They had to withdraw in the first round from the Liberty Mutual Legends pro golf tournament because of Sindelar’s persistent back pain.

Boise, Idaho - The tournament had a purse of $2,700,000 divided among 70 golfers who play in two man teams with the winners spitting $460,000. Cook and Sindelar had a good chance of placing high in the standings with Cook coming off his second win of the season in the previous tournament.

In pro tournaments like The Legends even the last place finishers walk away with $10,000, so it is no wonder that pro golfers do what ever they can to prevent back pain from sidelining them during the tour. Most pro golfers have physical therapists to work with them to make sure they steer clear of back pain.

Studies have shown that range-of-motion (flexibility) deficits in the lead hip and the lumbar spine (low back) correlate with a history of low back pain in golfers. The mechanics of the follow through when driving the ball are directly affected by lack of flexibility in the hips. When follow through mechanics are altered in this way the discs and joints in the lower back take a serious beating.

In a normal golf swing the large muscles of the lead hip will absorb the force of the shoulders and torso as they rotate through the swing. However restricted range of motion in the hip reduces the ability of those muscles to slow down that rotation. Without sufficient shock absorption from the muscles of hip the rotational force of the body is channeled directly into the low back. Repetitively forcing excessive rotation into the lower back will eventually result in low back pain. Without proper treatment this pain can progress to the point where the golfer can no longer compete.

Lower back pain can generally be traced to a mechanical problem in the way people move, especially in golfers. That is why hip and low back stretches are a vital part of any back pain relief program and an integral part of most professional golfers’ daily routine.

When the minimum prize for a weekend of professional golf is $10,000 it’s not surprising that most pro golfers do what ever they can to prevent lower back pain from taking them out of the game.

Joey Sindelar will most likely be doing physical therapy that includes hip and back stretches throughout the season. He plans to be back and “ready to go in Birmingham (at the Regions Tradition)” in early May.
