The road from Bangkok airport to Central Bangkok is lined with golden statues of figures inspired by Thai mythology. These statues provide a glimpse of the huge impact of religion in Thailand. Known for their gentle nature and friendly demeanor, the Thai have managed to attract almost every traveler looking for the exotic.
The honest and serene nature of Thai people is known throughout the world and stems from their deeply religious nature. Ask any native the reason for his happiness and he’ll point fingers to the benevolent King Bhumibol Adulyadej who’s built roads, bridges, damns and hospitals in the country. The King has also arranged for a project where elephants that were once used for logging are now used to attract tourists. Here tourists- mainly lovers of the pachyderm can volunteer to walk, feed and bathe the elephants. As they take care of these animals they also get to learn and appreciate this magnetic elephant.
Another aspect that’s very close to Thailand is their customs. Buddhism is a major influence in Thailand. Unlike other cultures people are taught to think for themselves and hence people including children aren’t influenced to think in a certain manner. Buddhism is more related to self realization and an inherent respect for others. Here in Thailand you’d seldom find people yelling and shouting at others, making meaningless conversation, respecting the name and property of someone. If a Thailand travel is on the cards, remember to smile generously and also show respect for their monks.
Thus if you’re planning a visit to a temple in Pattaya or anywhere in Thailand, make sure you do not travel in shorts or tank tops and remember to remove your shoes before you enter the temple. Women should not touch the monks and never ever touch a person on his head.
A mention of Thailand and the Thai people is incomplete without a mention of food. The cuisine varies from region to region. Chiang Mai for example is known for its milder curries and soups, whereas the northeastern part of Thailand is known for food that has a generous dose of green chillies.
“If you’re planning to travel to Thailand, don’t be a regular tourist and make sure you sample everything right from their food to culture and even beliefs,” says the spokesperson for ABC Thailand, a website that gives you all that’s to know about the country.
