Energy efficiency is seen as a potent means to counter the effect of energy shortage across the globe but its potential is yet to be realized. The scarcity of fossil fuels has become a prominent factor across the globe, leading to the gradual escalation of price. This has led governments across the globe to devise strategies to ensure energy security. The concern is more pronounced in the emerging economies of Asia such as India and China where the major portion of their energy demand is met by imports from the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The energy efficiency sector comprises four key sub-sectors; energy efficient lighting, energy efficient buildings (green buildings), energy efficient technologies in manufacturing industries and green information technologies (IT). The slow penetration of renewable energy sources coupled with their high installation and operational costs has made energy efficiency the key and immediate measure to ensure energy security. However, global investment trends indicate preference to renewables as the solution to ensure national energy security.
