A small village located in the Wardha district, about 80 kms from Nagpur was chosen by Gandhiji to set up an ashram in the year 1936. He named it Sewagram which means ‘a village for service’. The ashram was operated on the basis of Gandhiji’s code of belief – to work towards the upliftment of the rural poor. It is the place where Gandhiji spent the last years of his life and where he practiced his vision for India – a nation of progressive but simple and self-sufficient villages where all citizens were equal. Gandhiji’s noble thoughts are reflected in every corner of the ashram – it is built with local and renewable materials and simple enough for living. Sewagram ashram holds up Gandhiji’s legacy as there are organizations and individuals who are committed to preserving it in and around Wardha.
