A group of leading spine surgeons from the South Texas Spinal Clinic have announced that they can ease the pain during spine surgery with their latest ‘Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion or XLIF technique developed by NuVasive in collaboration with Dr. Luiz Pimenta. The procedure was successfully implemented on Mariscela .F. Gaona, a patient suffering from chronic spine problems.
“The NuVasive technology was ideal for Ms. Gaona as it significantly lessened collateral damage. However it may not be the right procedure for every patient. The suitability of the technique largely depends on the patient’s spinal condition and the location of the spinal problem. The surgery involves side entry to the surgical site rather than access from the back or the front. Through the technique, patients experience less tissue trauma, less scarring, less blood loss and less post operative discomfort,” says Dr. Gilbert. R. Meadows, a Texas spine surgeon at the South Texas Spinal Clinic. The clinic offers physical therapy, back school, work hardening, functional assessment, electromyography, as well as pain management.
But as earlier said, this isn’t viable for everyone. “We offer the latest techniques in micro surgery including microendoscopic discectomy, interbody fusion with cages, and are also involved in various procedures currently under investigation across the country. These techniques are aimed to lessen pain and reduce hospital stay for patients. For example, for a complex procedure like lumbar fusion, patients do not have to stay for more than 3-4 days,” adds Dr. Meadows. Before the patient can agree for a surgery, he is prepared for his role in the healing and recovery process.
The clinic has some of the best spine surgeons in the country and is a pioneer in back pain management. Every surgeon at the clinic has been certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and has completed a fellowship training program specializing in spinal care and spine surgery. In addition to the surgeons, a board certified Physical Medicine Rehabilitation Doctor provides conservative care for musculoskeletal injuries and myofascial pain management.
