Slug-A-Bug, lawn and pest control, in Melbourne, remembered and posthumously honored the company’s past president Doug Vander Poest, at their annual customer service training seminar on Saturday, June 4th. The event dedicated to his memory was held at The Home Builders and Contractors Association of Brevard’s facility.
Mr. Vander Poest was loved and respected by all whose lives he touched. He dedicated hundreds of hours each year to serving the community in which he lived and worked. He was involved in the Eau Gallie Rotary and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was active in the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce, AMI Kids, The American Cancer Society, The Homebuilders Association of Brevard County and The Melbourne Association of Realtors.
His Industry involvement included serving as President of the Florida Pest Management Association and being instrumental in the creation and development of the Pest Management University, which is part of the University of Florida.
Doug Vander Poest embodied the heart and soul of Slug-A-Bug, according to Steve Lum, who was theGeneral Manager of the company andthen stepped in as company president when Doug passed away in 2005. “He was kind and caring and made his mark on this worldby touching and helping anyone and everyone that needed assistance,” said Lum.
This years training day was entitled, “Back to the Future” and was used to rekindle the spirit of every employee that knew Doug, and to educate and inspire those that never had the opportunity of getting to know him.
“That’s the foundation upon which Slug-A-Bug was built: Caring; and that’s what Slug-A-Bug is still about today,” said Lum.
Lum continued, “The ‘training day’ was blanketed with caring: Caring for one another, caring for our customers, caring for the community and caring for our environment.”
Yes, there was also standardized customer service training, but it was weaved together with stories about Doug, from employees who worked with and loved him.
At the conclusion of the program, the first annual Doug Vander Poest award was presented to Jim Burgess, along with $500.00 in cash. The award was voted on by the employees and given to the individual at SAB that most represents Doug’s spirit of selflessness, positive caring attitude and work ethic.
When Lum was asked about the secret to SAB’S success; he summed it up this way: “We care about people, and when you care about people; people care about you.”
Doug Vander Poest would have been proud.
