Gateway to India : Orissa Symposium Focuses Attention on Business Opportunities in Orissa

Sri Surya Narayan Patro, Honourable Cabinet Minister of Revenue, Disaster Management and Information and Public Relations, inaugurated the 'Gateway to India : Orissa symposium which was held on the 1st July 2011 at the hotel Marriott in Pano, Texas. In his address, Mr. Patro, invited US based entreprenures and business persons to consider Odisha as their preferred destination when considering expanding their business to India. He offered all supports to non-resident Odiyas, Indians and others who were interested to extend business relationship in Orissa.
The symposium started with an welcome address by Convener Mr. Ashok Khuntia, while the symposium agenda was explained by Mr. Deepak Mahapatra, with Dr. Gopal Mahapatra introducing the delegates from Orissa. Mr. Tapan Padhi introduced the Chief Guest – Minister Sri Patro. Following the address of the minister, Mr. T. Ramachandru, Principal Secretary for Industries, Government of Orissa presented the general over-view of the Business scenario in the state and highlighted the developments such as the state being the highest FDI earner for last several years and also having maintained a very high growth rate of its GDP which was higher than the national average. Mr. C. J. Venugopal, CMD – IPICOL presented a detailed PowerPoint describing the specific business opportunities in different sectors in the state. He also highlighted the policy initiatives of the Government which was facilitating the investment flow. He also highlighted the fact that although issues around land acquisition for the POSCO project was hugging all the media limelight, there were a large number of projects that have already taken off very successfully in the state. Dr. Dhanada Kanta Mishra, Chairman HDF and convener of Invest Bhubaneswar gave a short presentation showing the impressive track record of Invest Bhubaneswar as a platform.. He also invited all present to come and attend the IB symposium on 16th/17th December 2011 in Bhubaneswar.
In the first technical session on IT, ITES and Telecommunications, Mr. Sandeep Sen of Aegis Communication, Bhanu Panda of Array Networks, Pardeep Kohli, CEO – Mavenir Systems and Salil Saha or Mahindra Satyam took part and presented about their experience of doing business in India and Bhuabenswar. Mr. A. K. Mohanty of Tatwa Technology represented the Odisha delegation on the delegation and presented on the work of Tatwa Technology. Mr. Ramachandru presided over the panel and answered questions from the audience.
The second technical session after lunch was on Infrastructure, Energy and Higher Education. The panelists consisted of Joseph Diehl of Diehl and Co LLC, Robert Becker of Becker Architect, Michael Gorton of CEO, Principal Solar, Raj Asava of Asava Consulting, Prof. Chitta Baral of Arizona State University spoke on their respective perspectives. While Mr. Diehl and Mr. Becker were from Washington state and had visited Odisha last year with proposals on housing and tourism, Michael Gorton spoke on opportunities for collaboration in the Solar Energy sector. Prof. Chitta Baral presented about the emerging higher education scenario in Odisha and associated opportunities for investment. CMD – IPICOL, Mr. Venugopla presided over the session. Mr. Pradipta Panigrahi of Gayatri Solar presented on scope of Solar Energy in Odisha.
In the closing session, congressman Jim McDermott of Washington state who led a WASITRAC delegation last year to Odisha spoke at length on his experience and opportunities of collaboration between USA and India in general and states of Washington and Odisha in particular. Judge Ko spoke on initiative of President Obama on People of Asian and Pacific Islanders. Mr. Satyananda Mishra, Chief Commissioner of India spoke on changes in India due to RTI which is making the system transparent and business-friendly.
