The principle of gender equality is enshrined in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles. The Constitution not only grants equality to women, but also empowers the State to adopt measures of positive discrimination in their favor. However, the rights of women are still not realised in many spheres. Thus, the role of the Stree Mukti Sanghatana becomes necessary to help liberate women from economic, social, political, cultural and psychological oppression. Stree Mukti Sanghatana is a voluntary organization which has been improving the lives of women and campaigning for their rights through a wide range of initiatives. These include awareness campaigns, setting up day care centers for the children of working Mums, providing access to healthcare and a family counseling service to name a few. The cultural troupe of Stree Mukti Sanghatana has a consistent track record of 30 years. It has reached every nook and corner of India with the help of powerful plays and numerous songs on women’s issues. Since 1979, 7 plays have been staged and numerous songs composed on women's issues to create mass awareness. The women go through an environmental entrepreneurship programme which helps them to gain skills in organic manure making, gardening, leadership development and formation of cooperatives, etc.
