Melbourne based laser eye surgeon, Dr. Cherny explains about the services offered at his laser eye clinic in Melbourne. The clinic offers different services including laser eye surgery, LASIK, etc.
“Laser eye surgery in Melbourne is a relatively new procedure and has provided relief for millions of people who’ve had to bear the discomfort of wearing glasses. While some were uncomfortable wearing glasses, there were others who found strong glasses to produce distortion and some others found wearing glasses intolerable due to sensitiveness,” says Dr. Cherny.
The Excimer laser is ideal to cure shortsightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism. The laser works by sending brief pulses of ultraviolet light onto the cornea. The energy from the light breaks apart the molecules on the very surface of the cornea, with each pulse removing about one quarter of one micron of tissue. The laser then sculpts the cornea to the desired shape.
The Excimer laser is also used for LASIK surgery. LASIK refers to a corneal flap that is created using a microkeratome. A specially trained laser eye surgeon then pulls back the flap to expose the corneal tissue to reshape the cornea in a pre-specified pattern.
LASIK has several advantages and disadvantages, explains Dr. Cherny. “Patients do not have worry about scarring, or other problems. The surgery also helps with increased stability of the vision for higher levels of myopia. Recovery from the surgery is relatively easy and eye drops are usually not needed for more than a week,” he adds.
The Excimer laser is also used for PRK or ASLA surgery. PRK was very popular before LASIK took over. This is still considered to be a viable option for those who cannot afford a LASIK surgery.
And for people over 40, who’ve been advised glasses, can get their vision corrected by using the LASIK with Monovision surgery.
Dr. Cherny is considered to be an authority in laser eye surgery. The Melbourne based laser eye surgeon has been performing laser eyesight correction for the past 20 years and was the first Australian eye trainee to spend his advanced training year in laser eyesight correction.
