Army and Navy Academy Hosts Second Annual “Camp Challenge” Program to Local Teens
Having doubled attendance of the program since last year, Camp Challenge was fully enrolled this summer, with 36 cadets in the program. Many of these cadets will elect to apply and enroll at Army and Navy Academy in the fall, as they gain the benefit of LET credit, leadership training and character development.

Having doubled attendance of the program since last year, Camp Challenge was fully enrolled this summer, with 36 cadets in the program. Many of these cadets will elect to apply and enroll at Army and Navy Academy in the fall, as they gain the benefit of LET credit, leadership training and character development.
Consisting of 180 hours of leadership education and training provided by the US Army Cadet Command, this summer program emulates training received by Army and Navy Cadets throughout the school year.
Crafted by the Academy’s Senior Army Instructor, Major Mike Basista, who has studied similar programs at other institutions, the leadership training program encompasses a variety of topics from theory to application. Each cadet is learning valuable skills with CPR and First Aid training and certification. In addition, for those who qualified, Lifeguard and SCUBA certifications can be earned.
Highlights of the program include an in-depth tour of the USS Stockdale, by the ship’s Executive Officer, Lieutenant Commander Dan Arthur. Learning everything from how to properly board and depart from a United States warship, Cadets can expect to enjoy hours of training on naval leadership and how to apply these skills to “real life”.
The culminating leadership experience will take cadets off-site again, this time just north of the school. At Camp Pendleton, Cadets will be required to complete a “Leadership Reaction Course” as well as other field training challenges that test their leadership and abilities to work as a team.
Graduation is scheduled for Saturday, July 30th at the Academy’s seaside Chapel at 9:00. The public is welcome to attend.

Army and Navy Academy Cadet and Camp Challenge Alum, Tyler Beach, Class of 2012 comments on his experience returning to the Academy this summer as a Camp Challenge Counselor, “The program is going well. We have a much larger group this summer than when I was a student last year. The first few days were challenging trying to learn each cadet’s personality and their strengths, but we pushed through. It’s been an exciting experience to be able to give instructions to cadets this time around. I’m the only counselor who was a student last summer. I try and use that to my advantage when working with students who are having a difficult time. Last week one of our cadets was really homesick. I’ve been there, so it was easy to try and comfort him and remind him this experience is short term and the bonds he’ll make with his classmates are solid.”
