Banarasi Sarees get their name from Banaras, a local name for the city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. A Banarasi saree is known for its intricate embroidery in gold and silver brocade. A dedicated teamwork is required for a good and unique well made saree. Normally three people are engaged to make a single saree, while the time required is 15 days to 6 months depending upon the designs on the sarees.

The materials used for making a Banarasi saree are, pure silk, organza, georgette and shattir. The core of the Banarasi Saree is of gold and silver threads which are used for weaving motifs on a saree. Several other features in a saree are heavy gold work, compact weaving, metallic visual effects, rich Pallas, jaal (a net like pattern) and mina work.

To wear a saree one need a matching blouse to the saree and a petticoat. The blouse piece of Banarasi sarees is woven with the saree and that can be cut down and given shape accordingly.

Jamdani Banarasi sarees have special motifs which are woven with cotton threads. The Jamwar Tanchoi sarees have Jamawar paisley motifs which are taken from Kashmiri Jamawar shawls. Butidar sarees are designed with gold, silver and silk threads.
