Rare Earth Phosphors currently represent key materials in modern display and energy efficient lighting technologies. As a result of their higher efficiencies, larger viewing area and increased portability - traditional CRTs today are now being replaced by liquid crystal displays (LCDs), plasma display panel screens (PDPs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The ever growing demand of cell phones and cameras are also providing additional growth in the display segment. Apart from displays, energy efficient lighting technologies such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and LEDs are also currently witnessing rapid growth. These lights use only a quarter of the power needed to produce the same amount of light as the standard incandescent light bulb and have a significantly higher life span.

The projections from the report suggest that the demand of rare earth elements in Phosphors is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 9% during 2010 and 2015 reaching 13000 tonnes. A major finding from the report suggests that three rare earth elements – Yttrium, Europium and Terbium are critical components of Rare Earth Phosphors. Out of the three elements, the report expects a critical supply shortage of Terbium and Europium in the coming years.
