So you’re fed up with the British Summer and don’t want to risk your skin on the sunbeds, but you haven’t quite mastered the art of applying fake tan yet. When was the last time you used fake tan? The sunless tanning industry has moved on massively in the last few years and most fake tanners now no longer make you look like you’ve been tangoed. Product choice and application technique still play a major part in getting the perfect results, and with a little help you can now avoid the most common fake tan mishaps and accidents.
The six most common fake tan ( http://www.famousdave.co.uk/ )mishaps and accidents revealed, and how to avoid them:
1. Orange Tan - Orange undertones can occur if you have applied too much of the fake tanning product, or used a fake tan that is too dark for your skin tone. Self tanning novices should start with a gradual tanning lotion or a light fake tan product and build up the tan over a few applications, as this will help achieve more natural-looking results.
2. Streaky Tan – No fake tan product should streak if it is applied evenly. Exfoliate well before self tanning to ensure a patch-free tan, and apply the fake tanning product with long overlapping circular motions, and remember that the self tanner will tan you where you have applied it. Wear loose-fitting clothes and avoid physical activity whilst the tan is developing; even mild perspiration can affect the results.
3. No tan – Unless you are naturally very pale, you may need to choose a fake tan product that will give you a medium to dark tan, or simply apply more of the product. Wear loose-fitting clothes and avoid exercise/sweating whilst the tan develops.
4. Orange Hands - Always apply fake tan with a self tanning mitt or gloves, especially if the fake tan product comes with a guide colour.
5. Dark Knees and Elbows – Areas with dry, harder skin tend to absorb more of the fake tan, so exfoliate well and then apply a moisturiser onto these areas a few minutes before self tanning to act as a barrier cream and reduce the amount of fake tan absorbed.
6. Patchy Tan – A patchy fake tan is usually caused by the skin’s condition, and not the self tanning product itself. Exfoliate well before fake tanning to ensure you are tanning the freshest layer of skin. After a few days your skin will start to renew itself, taking the tan with it. Exfoliate again every few days between fake tan applications to ensure your tan fades evenly, and moisturise daily to keep your skin hydrated. You can also keep your tan even by applying a gradual fake tan product in between normal applications.
Applying fake tan is actually very easy and only takes a careful preparation and application technique to get the best results out of any product.
