Heroin is a highly addictive and rapidly acting opiate, a derivative of opium. Specifically, heroin is produced from morphine, which is a principal component of opium. The mode of consumption is injection, snorting or smoking.
Individuals who abuse heroin over time develop a tolerance for the drug, which gradates to larger doses to achieve the same intensity or effect of their first experience. Heroin ceases to produce feelings of pleasure in users who develop tolerance; instead, these users must continue taking the drug simply to feel normal. The users who inject the drug expose themselves to additional risks, including HIV, hepatitis B and C, and other blood-borne viruses. Chronic users who inject heroin also risk scarred or collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, abscesses, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and liver and kidney disease.
Drug rehabilitation is the processes of medical and/or psycho-therapeutic treatment, for dependency on psychoactive substances such as alcohol, heroin. The general intent is to enable the patient to cease substance abuse, in order to avoid the psychological, legal, financial, social, and physical consequences that can be caused, especially by extreme abuse. The physical symptoms associated with the withdrawal are extreme pain, tremors, cramps, chills, perspiration, priapism, tachycardia, itching, restless leg syndrome, flu-like symptoms, rhinitis, yawning, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea and weakness. On the other hand psychological symptoms are dysphoria, malaise, cravings, anxiety/panic attacks, paranoia, insomnia, dizziness, nausea, depression
Even though there are so many different drug treatment centers and programs offered all over the world for recovering addicts, even if they successfully succeed at completing the rehab program, there is still always that very real possibility for relapse for anyone who has ever been addicted to any drug, particularly those who have ever had a heroin dependence. Relapse prevention programs have been created as a part of the rehabilitation therapy at many drug rehab centers, and some of the relapse prevention programs even extend longer, even after the patient has left the drug treatment facility. Another important factor is the social inclusion. For recovering addicts from any kind of drug obsession they need the support of their close and loved ones. These programs along with the social support give those with heroin addictions and other drug and alcohol addictions more tools and ammunition to prepare themselves for the temptation to use again, and the ability to successfully fight it with resilience.
Heroin is an offshoot of opium whose abuse has reached alarming levels in the present day. The adversity of the effects can be fatal and destructive in other cases. But having said that there are rehabilitation centers who extend a helping hand to those who do not intend to trod the dragon's path anymore. They ensure that the opioid dependence is got rid of. But this effort requires the family and the society's participation too. The addict goes through a number of symptoms and sufferings, but all of them can be taken care of at the rehab centers. After all, they undo the imperilment the addict does to himself and his loved ones.
