Some step is better than no step at all. Employees of an SEO company in Nagercoil have decided to join hands with Anna Hazare and his movement by staying on a one day fast.
A retarded bureaucracy is one of the legacies left for us by the British. Unfortunately even after 64 years of independence, this legacy continues and has resulted in a convenient nexus between corrupt politicians, greedy bureaucrats and blithe commoners who wouldn’t be bothered about anything until their job’s done. In fact, it’s common in India to shrug your shoulders and say ‘chalta hai’ to tolerate everything.
Getting your pension approved, claiming your medical insurance, getting your license renewed, getting your land registered...nothing in India moves without greasing the palms of babus. Corruption exists in every society, but it’s in India that it’s seeped in the lowest levels. And it has reached endemic proportions.
There are countless Indians who do not fully comprehend the Jan LokPal Bill and have vague notions about the implications of the bill. All that they understand is that there’s someone out there, who can express their anguish.
Token strikes like these have become common throughout the country. From school students in Ranchi, to the dabbawallas in Mumbai and students of the elite IIM Kanpur; everyone has decided to throw their weight behind this frail looking man.
“The Jan LokPal Bill may, or may not be the solution to India’s corruption woes. But people here are frustrated and disillusioned with corrupt leaders. What Anna has managed to do, is to put a face to the millions of middle class Indians looking for an honest leader- one who is incorruptible himself and has the nerves to look into the eye of every one in power and demand that they show accountability,” says Elwinston, the coordinator for the event.
“This token fast is to express our solidarity not only with Anna, but also with the middle class of India who have decided to raise their voice against corruption” adds Elwinston.
