For the third year running, Children’s Physicians Medical Group ( http://www.cpmgsandiego.com/ ) (CPMG) of San Diego is sponsoring the youth recreational soccer league of the San Diego Soccer Club. The sponsorship is part of an effort by CPMG to support and highlight the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle among kids and teens. The contributions of CPMG support the participation of 1,000 children from the greater San Diego area in the upcoming fall soccer season.
The scope of CPMG’s commitment to children’s health extends far beyond the realm of providing a network of pediatric medical care to their enrollees. The organization supports the development of active, balanced, and whole-health lifestyles in children at the local and national level. In the local area, CPMG supports organizations that promote youth health and fitness, like the San Diego Soccer Club and the San Diego State University Aztec basketball teams’ Ball Kids program. At the national level, CPMG offers free information and advice on children’s health issues via social networking sites like Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/cpmgsandiego ) and YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/user/CPMGSanDiego ). The information provided by CPMG physicians on the web is available for free to anyone with an internet connection. Parents, guardians, and child care professionals are encouraged to subscribe to CPMG’s social network pages to stay up to date on important health and fitness information for kids.
CPMG recommends that children become involved in sports as early as possible, but thinks children of all ages can begin a healthy active lifestyle. Most high schools have athletic programs for teens that can lead to college scholarships and other opportunities. Parents and guardians should encourage older children to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle as much as they encourage younger children to do the same. Aside from the major health benefits of regular physical activity, children that participate in youth athletics will have additional opportunities to make new friends, visit different cities for competitions, and develop self confidence.
Statistically, children who participate in youth athletics are more likely to practice healthy lifestyle habits than children who don’t. Opportunities all over the country exist for kids that want to become involved in sports; for more information on local offerings parents should contact school administration staff or a local youth/teen center.
With over 50 offices in and around the San Diego and southern Riverside areas, CPMG has connected over 76,000 member children with over 400 pediatricians and pediatric specialists. The organization also maintains a close affiliation with Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego which grants enrollees access to all Rady facilities and services.
